Critical Differences. What Coaching is not. So before you pull out your credit card or checkbook and spend thousands of dollars on someone called a coach, use this checklist

Coaching is not Consulting. A consultant is more problem or project specific and focuses more on a single area of your business addressing short-term problems.

Coaching is not Mentoring. Mentoring is focused on the past, not the present or the future. Mentoring is sharing the coach’s experience  which may have no relevance to the clients situation.

Coaching is not Counseling or Therapy. Coaching is generally proactive whereas counseling is reactive. Counseling or other psychological therapies require specific in depth training degrees and potential medical licensing.

Coaching is not Teaching/Facilitating or Training. Guiding someone through a linear and static personal growth curriculum is not coaching. It is facilitating.

Coaching is holding up a mirror. It’s all about who you are, your expertise, your life, your agenda and reflecting on that, developing clarity. Coaching is a very powerful method all about asking curious, nonjudgmental, drawing out from the client their own answers for long term success. Imagine coaching as a relationship that is entirely focused on you, someone who actually listens and not just hears, someone who is insatiably curious about who you are and who you intend to be, who holds you accountable to your dreams and aspirations.
