Sales and Membership Director

The Mountain View Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based non-profit that integrates business, government, and mission-driven organizations to serve and enhance the community at large. Through programs, campaigns, events, extensive networking, and public advocacy, the Chamber serves as a convener, catalyst, and champion for the city and the region. Our highly diverse, innovative, and active member base includes more than 600 businesses – from international corporations to solo entrepreneurs.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Sales and Membership Director is the primary income generator for the Chamber. Nearly half of the Chamber’s $975K budget comes from corporate sponsorships, memberships and fundraising. Another $85,000 is raised for the Chamber Foundation’s educational and community programs. All elements need to provide tangible benefits for our member businesses while serving the community at large.
This dynamic and senior role includes:
- Securing Sponsorships for events, campaigns, programs and initiatives
- Member Recruitment and Ongoing Support
- Operational leadership and management, including the Downtown Business Association (DBA)
The position is based in Mountain View, CA. No relocation is provided, and applicants must be familiar with the unique nature of our city and the Bay Area region.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as top organizational resource for income generation and member satisfaction. Actively engage directly with Board of Directors and key City officials as needed.
- Create and execute 3-year strategic sales plan, which should include tiered corporate sponsorship packages for key large events, as well as smaller initiatives and programs
- Design and manage fundraising events and campaigns for educational programs
- Build membership base with short and long-term strategies, campaigns, and programs, and maintain a robust pipeline. Ensure member’s level and package best suits their needs and circumstances, and perform appropriate onboarding support.
- Evaluate membership package at least annually, and make recommendations for any changes based on needs and circumstances, especially upgrades or add-on programs.
- Directly lead and manage the operations of the Downtown Business Association (DBA), including fostering their engagement and advocating on their behalf. Also prepare annual DBA activity and budget report for the City.
- Provide proactive and excellent ongoing customer service, including regular personal check-ins both informally and in structured settings, and a solid understanding of their needs.
- Play matchmaker. Identify opportunities where companies and/or community organizations, with mutually beneficial needs can work together, and facilitate introductions and getting started.
- Work closely with key agencies and organizations on common objectives that directly affect local businesses, such as neighborhood associations and City government.
- Manage and leverage Ambassador Program, ensuring outreach to new members and assistance with programs, campaigns and events
- Perform member and sponsor billing, invoicing, and collection. Prepare month-end sales reports for presentation to Board.
- Backstop the CEO as needed for overall operations
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Proven success in running large corporate sponsorship opportunities that net over $50,000, including securing at least $5,000 from a single source
- A deep passion for serving the local community
- Near fanatical focus on customer service, balanced with financial and operational considerations
- Measurable success executing sales and marketing campaigns for small businesses that drive both physical and virtual traffic
- Experience building and maintaining strategic partnerships that yielded mutual positive results
- Exceptional creativity in outreach, engagement and sponsorship approaches
- Excellent internal and external communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to establish and maintain rapport with a wide range of individuals and organizations
- Strong planning, operational, reporting, and organizational skills, with explicit attention to detail
- Dynamic and versatile self-starter who is comfortable in highly interactive and fluid environments
- Experience with volunteer recruitment, management and motivation
- Positive attitude and outlook, and will actively contribute to team-oriented dynamic
Highly Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with Chambers of Commerce, City government and non-profits
- Charitable fundraising experience
- Facile with Social Networking platforms, especially Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, and Facebook.
- Expertise with the following software: Chamber Master, Google G-Suite, QuickBooks
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This position is full-time, exempt. Salary is $75,000/yr plus health insurance benefits and retirement plan. Generous vacation package including one week at Thanksgiving and the last two weeks of December. Commute and phone allowances are available. Split between office and work-from-home time is supported; some early morning and evening meetings/events are required, as well as two-weekend functions each year. The Director reports directly to the President & CEO.
